Organizational Design

The effectiveness of an organization stems from a multitude of interdependent factors. Restructuring alone can never lead to high performance. Simply put, organizational behavior is a result of strategy, structure, systems, and culture. In an effective design, strategy dictates the structure and the systems such as HR, and IT supports the strategy. Culture cannot be "designed," but the context within which it evolves can be constructed.

Are the strategy, structure, systems, and culture of your organization aligned? How can the design be improved to achieve your vision and mission? What needs to change?

The Ripples Group can help you create the optimal design for your organization.

  • Case Examples
Impact of Volume Increase on Public Health Organization
Client: Large Medicaid agency.
Situation: The client required recommendations on how to adjust its organizational structure in order to handle a large increase in volume caused by legislated changes in eligibility.
Ripples Approach: Ripples developed a model that calculated the system’s capacity and staffing needs for handling the volume of new applications. Our team identified the need for long-term staffing adjustments. The system model utilized multivariable linear programming to predict the short-term and stabilized processing volume, and as part of the model development, Ripples conducted an in-depth capacity flow analysis exposing the steady-state and stressed capacity potential.
Result: Using Ripples’ predictions, the client developed capacity adjustments to handle member volumes successfully, and service levels remained within established levels throughout the transition period.
A New Service Model for Preventive Care
Client: State agency providing preventive care services to low-income and underinsured women.
Situation: To keep pace with state health reforms, the client needed to develop a completely new service model and recontract all of its existing provider network.
Ripples Approach: After facilitating discussion among an 84-member Expert Panel to solicit recommendations, Ripples assisted in the development of a new service model by helping develop a care coordination service to aid with managing client health over time. Ripples served as a significant partner in the development of a revised RFR for recontracting, which included new performance metrics and contract management approaches.
Result: The client developed an entirely new Care Coordination model based on evidence-based strategies to create long-term compliance with preventive care.
